Our unit enjoys excellent relationships with the gynaecologists working in other hospitals in Cape Town. Drs Jeffery, Kruger and Brouard understand the challenges in performing pelvic floor surgery and we believe that it is in the best interests of patient care to be available to assist our colleagues. We regularly have visitors and observers to our operating lists, and these are usually private gynaecologists and urologists wanting to develop their skills further.
Drs Jeffery, Kruger and Brouard travel regularly to Port Elizabeth, East London and George and Uitenhage Hospitals to perform surgery. These lists are usually accompanied by a pre-operative assessment ward round and discussion with both the patient and local physicians on the procedure. Support for these visits is usually from the JC Coetzee fund, but occasionally industry support is utilized.
Dr Jeffery has an excellent relationship with a number of fledgling units internationally. Dr Jeffery has visited Prof Raheela Mohsin at the Aga Karachi, Pakistan on two occasions. In 2012 he lectured and demonstrated live surgery at the Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Pakistan’s jubilee celebrations. In 2013, Aga Khan University organized a Urogynaecology congress and Dr Jeffery also lectured and performed live surgery at this event. He has also lectured and demonstrated surgery on three occasions in Nairobi at the International Centre for Minimal Access Surgery with Dr Rafique Parkar. Our unit has an excellent relationship with Dr Michael Breen, who is an excellent fistula surgeon working in Monze, Zambia. Dr Jeffery travelled to Zambia in 2013 to perform surgery with Dr Breen and will work with Dr Breen at a fistula camp in Angola in May 2014. We have also had a number of visiting fellows who have spent time, ranging from a few weeks to a few months, in our unit. This has included Dr Ronnie Acharyya (Hull, UK), Dr Swebby Macha (Lusaka, Zambia) and Christie Greene (Tampa, Florida). Dr Jeffery is the Departmental liaison for the International Student Elective program and through the years we have accommodated medical students from the UK, Germany, Australia, USA, Holland, Belgium, Austria and Turkey.
