Monday:

9 – 12h00

Gynaecology Outpatients

Patients must be referred from level one or level two health institutions with a referral letter. Women who require urgent attention should be sent to the Emergency Unit (C24), Groote Schuur Hospital) with a referral letter. Women who require relatively urgent attention i.e. within one or two weeks should be discussed with the consultant or registrar on call for gynaecology by calling 021 – 404 3333 (central paging) or 021 – 404 4498 (gynaecology outpatients) or 021 404 3385 (gynaecology ward, F5).

Elective bookings are currently made via a central booking system by phoning 021 – 404 5566

The clinic is located on K Floor, Room 78, Outpatient Building, Groote Schuur Hospital

Molar clinic

All women diagnosed with a molar pregnancy are followed up at this clinic. Bookings are made either via central booking system (021 404 5566) or via 021 404 4488 or contact ward F5 (021 404 3385) and ask to speak to the Gynaecology Oncology registrar. This clinic is located in the Gynaecology Outpatient Clinic, K Floor, Room 78, Outpatient Building, Groote Schuur Hospital.

Colposcopy clinic (021 404 4489)

Referral Criteria

All women with an abnormal Pap smear according to the following criteria:

3 x ASCUS Pap smears 6 – 12 months apart
2 x LSIL smears 6 – 12 months apart
1 x ASC-H smear
1 x Atypical glandular cells (AGC) smear - from any source (Endometrium, cervix or ovary)
1 X HSIL smear
Any smear suggestive of cancer
Clinically abnormal/concerning cervix

The clinic is located on the K Floor, Room 55, in the Outpatient Building Groote Schuur Hospital

 

Vulval clinic (conducted at the same clinic as the Colposcopy clinic, K Floor, Room 55, Outpatient Building)

Any woman with symptoms or a lesion on vulva that requires specialist attention

Radiation clinic (LE 33, Groote Schuur Hospital, 021 404 4261)

Women who have received radiation therapy for a gynaecological cancer or who need follow up post surgery, with or without concomitant radiation, are followed up at this clinic. For further information contact Dr Leon Van Wijk on leon.vanwijk@uct.ac.za or cell phone 082 356 0816.

Combined meeting with Pathologists, Radiation Oncologists and Gynaecological Oncology team during which the pathology of all women with gynaecological cancers are reviewed, evaluated and provisional treatment plan discussed. Meeting takes place in the seminar room of C floor in Radiation Oncology, L Block, Groote Schuur Hospital

09h00 – 12h00

Combined Assessment Clinic (LE 33, Groote Schuur Hospital, 021 404 4261).

This clinic is by referral only via Gynaecology ward F5. If a patient has a confirmed or suspected gynaecological cancer either refer the patient via the Emergency Unit, Groote Schuur Hospital with a referral letter or contact the Gynaecology Oncology registrar via 021 – 404 3385 for an urgent admission to ward F5. If this is unsuccessful contact either Dr Nomonde Mbatani on 083 270 5912 or Professor Denny on 082 658 2517 or Dr Leon Van Wijk on 082 356 0816.

Women with gynaecological cancers are evaluated by the team consisting of the radiation oncologists and gynaecological oncologists. Each woman is evaluated holistically and in consultation with her, her family and the team, a management plan is designed and arrangements made from this clinic. Women are seen at this clinic once a diagnosis has already been confirmed in the ward and the appropriate work-up and diagnostic tests performed.

Alternative weeks, Paediatric Gynaecology Clinic at Red Cross Hospital (location)

Referral Criteria:

  • Only cold cases are seen. Emergencies are seen in the Emergency Unit of RXH
  • Patients are referred by the Day Hospitals, GPs, Gynaecologists and specialist clinics at Red Cross Hospital
  • Cold cases can be discussed with Dr Nomonde Mbatani contactable on 083 270 5912 or nomonde.mbatani@uct.ac.za
  • All paediatric and adolescent gynaecology related problems will be accepted into the clinic with an appropriate referral letter.
  • Patients should be less than 13 years of age. Any patient who is 13 years and older

should be referred to Groote Schuur Hospital Gynaecology Outpatients or to the appropriate Primary Health Care Clinic

Chemotherapy clinic (LE 33, Groote Schuur Hospital, 021 404 4261)

Women requiring chemotherapy for a gynaecological cancer are treated and followed up at this clinic. All women are seen on a regular basis, evaluated by the multi-disciplinary team and followed up as appropriate. This clinic only accepts patients referred via the Combined Assessment Clinic as described above.
